Cà d’la Luna – the house of the moon- is a borgo house set near the centre of a fashionable working village and medieval hill town in Lunigiana, Northern Tuscany dating back to the 14C. Ca d’La luna has been totally restored on ground level to create a modern home but done in a style to maintain the feel of a borgo house. The rooms are not large but ample for two persons. This level consists of a living room, two bedrooms and modern bathroom with shower unit. The kitchen faces a walled terrazza with original flagstones. This is also used as an outside dining area. A feature of this upper terrace is a large old bread oven now used for BBQ’s and pizza parties. From the kitchen and terrazza there are views over the village to the hills beyond. The ever-present moon in lunigiana arc’s across the terrazza from where the house has gleaned its name. There is an attractive lower terrace with high old stone walls which is part paved in stone and on an upper level a shingled surface has been laid. This could be made into a kitchen garden for owner with more time available.

The old Cantina one used for pigs or the odd cows has been tastefully converted into a Taverna retaining the heavy chestnut beams and cross boards – creating a wine cellar and separate dining area accessed from the borgo. This room has dining facilities for 10 persons. Adjacent to this converted cantina are two further large cantinas in their original state. A damp course and concrete floor has been added, currently used as storage space this area would easily convert to useable living space and could access the lower terrace at the rear of the property.
There is an upper level above the ground floor which has yet to be restored but would convert into a further two bedrooms with a bathroom.

This property is to be found in the village of  Tavernelle in the Taverone valley at 412 metres above sea level. Tavernelle is a socially active village. There are currently 350 inhabitants the current “brit” owners of Cà d’La luna are the only foreigners to live in the village so this is no expatriate community and therefore would suite those who wish to be immersed in the Italian culture.Tavernelle is on the ridge of the Parco dei Cento laghi – the park of 100 lakes. This beautiful area is set in the Appennine Mountains which form a dramatic backdrop to the village offers good walking on marked trails and winter skiing with lifts to the upper slopes.

AMENITIES: There are two bars, post office, restaurant, general store, butchers shop and hardware in Tavernelle. The villa has its origins in the 1400s.It was at first a hunting lodge, but in 1490 the Borgia Pope Alexander the Sixth becomes the new owner and ordered work of amplification and embellishment. Presently, the villa is in perfect conditions, having been completely restored and restructured about 10 years ago. It has mantained intact its original structure, and the restoration work was accomplished using original materials. The interior area is 900 square meter (nearly 10,000 square feet), and is surrounded by 3 hectares (about 7.4 acres) of land. The villa is uniquely attractive since it has been embellished with antiquities over the centuries. There are 8 fireplaces, all with ornaments and rare marble, some of which are 2000 years old, and with arches of Roman times. The windows are mostly made of lead-based glass and are of the 1700s Venetian era. Of great note is a spiral staircase made of stone, of the Bernini school. In the various rooms one can often find ornaments of fine marble from various eras; of particular interest are some hand-decorated doors in the Florentine style of the 1500s. There are also two doors in the Spanish style of the 1700s. The architectural structure is imposing, but at the same time, sober and very elegant; the little balcony constructed by Alexander the Sixth is an example of rare refinement. In front of the villa there is a park with century-old trees in which are present some remains of an Etruscan temple. There is also a pool and a small building. In the park there is a theater with perfect acoustics. In addition to the park there is an olive grove, an orchard, and behind the house almond and hazel trees. As the villa is situated on a gentle hill, the higher stories of the house offer a marvelous panoramic view. There are no restrictions on the part of the Italian Government (the responsible bureau being the Sovrintendenza alle Belle Arti) on the villa regarding any future desired structural modifications.
